A the end of WWII the railroads were faced with the task of replacing large numbers of cars worn out by the war effort. For 40' boxcars most relied on the AAR (American Association of Railroads) recommended design that featured a 10'-6" interior height, 10 panel riveted sides, and either 6' or 8' doors. These cars were built in large numbers and were some of the last 40' box cars built. Many lasted in regular service well into the 1970's
