From 1957 to 1961, the Post Office issued 19 stamps in the "Champions of Liberty" series. These stamps honored heroes and patriots from other countries like Gandhi, Garibaldi, Padrewski, Masaryk, Bolivar, and others who fought for freedom. The last 18 were issued in 4-cent and 8-cent pairs; the international rate then was eight cents, and the images of the Champions of Liberty would thus be distributed around the world.
Fleetwood, in that company's usual artistic and colorful style, produced this panel to commemorate the 19 stamps. This panel is a beautiful, full-color arrangement of the 19 stamps, cancelled in Liberty, PA on December 10, 1977.On the left side is a second panel with bios of all the people on the stamps. This panel comes in a black folder with the Fleetwood logo on it.
