Description:
This  is a sleek mountain lion fetish by Zuni artist Peter Gasper.  He is made of Egyptian marble which has black and light tan markings.  He has inlaid turquoise eyes.  His prayer bundle is attached to his right side and has a Mother-of-Pearl arrowhead and coral and turquoise beads. His tail lays across his back. He is very unique.  In Native American cultures the mountain lion represents leadership, boundaries and setting a good example to its followers.
Many people collect fetishes today due to the diversity of the Zuni artisans and the meanings associated with them.  Also the beauty of the stones used, which are often incorporated into the design of the animal. They are small sculptures with spiritual meaning and are portable and evoke emotion when held and viewed.
