Description
Up for this Auction and your consideration is this very old Stainer Violin in used condition, needs lots of TLC to get it back up and running again. I have had it for years, and I think it came from an estate clean out. Was thinking of just throwing it out, until I looked closer at it. Saw the name, and a paper label inside. Thought better of it, and even though it is in sad condition, I think with TLC, some fixing up, and replacing parts it might become a worthy instrument.I will start with describing the violin and then move onto case and Bow.
It is marked Stainer at the base of the back of the neck. I know very little about string instruments, so bare me. I am a Woodwind kind of guy. All four string pegs are there. There are no strings, the bridge has fallen off but I did find it in the bottom of the case. The black thing that attaches to the string at the bottom of the Violin is gone. The back looks like a flamed mahogany to me, the front maybe spruce. Body seems in sound shape, I am not finding any cracks.Neck and head are in nice shape. Nice tiny inlaid pin stripe on front that follows the contour of the shape of the Violin. I am seeing a paper label inside, impossible to photograph, so I will tell you what it says;..."Jabobus Stainer in Abfam prope Oenipotum 1771.
Now I know that paper labels sometimes really mean something, and sometimes not. I know this Violin is old, my guess early 1900s or older. Could be from the 1800s, but whether it dates back to 1771, I don't have a clue. Maybe 1771 is when Jacobus started making Violins, I have no idea. You Pros will know better than I. There are 2 tiny missing wood chips at the base-front, cause by where the chin rest was attached. I have the chin rest and afew other items that are included. I believe this could be a nice and attractive violin if the time, effort, and elbow grease was put forth. Violin is 23 inches long X 7.0 to 7.5 inches wide at its widest point.
Now the Case;....Probably the original case, made of wood and paper inside lining. It has a paper label inside stating it is a GSB Violin Case. Has a very musty smell to it, side hook latches. Also has same impressed label on the back into the wood. Case measures 31 inches long X 9.5 inches wide at its widest point.
Now for the Bow:..... Measures 29 inches from tip to tip. Horse hair strings are gone, but I am sure that can be fixed with new. At the base there is mother of pearl inlay on the base of piece that holds horse hair and both sides of it. Also on the end of a round tip that seems to rotate. Above that piece that holds the horse hair, impressed into the wooden bow, it is signed "PAGANINI", probably the bow maker, sounds Italian to me. It is faint but there,.. tried to photograph it but it may not show up. Bow appears to be in good condition and is of a dark cherry wood or other wood. Has a reddish cast to it.
